چکیده

Stress can have a negative and costly impact on people’s lives. Mitigating stress before it becomes a problem requires early, noninvasive identification and a deeper understanding of the signals of stress. To test automatic stress detection a new dataset was created with subjects completing the Stroop task under unstressed and stressed conditions. This paper examines to what degree speech features respond to stress and if so, what features are most informative. Features were extracted from recorded speech data and trained with several classification algorithms. We explored binary classification of stressed vs. unstressed across gender and per gender, with the best results on a held-out test set improving over the majority class baseline (MCB) by 16% across genders and with 20% and 21% for the female and male subsets respectively. Overall maximum intensity emerged as the most informative feature when comparing across classification conditions. In addition, we explored leave-one subjectout classification, resulting in a 15% improvement on average considering both genders when using random forests.

"What We Feel, and What Doth us Befall": A Study of Letter Motif in Macbeth 

The present essay is an attempt to scrutinize Macbeth's letter to Lady Macbeth formalistically with much care and seek hints which may lead us back and forth to understand what befell before and after the composition and emission of the letter. The letter seems to help us plunge into Macbeth's consciousness, and of course later to that of Lady Macbeth; it is a transparent aid to perceive the hi...

Unsupervised Stress Information Labeling Using Gaussian Process Latent Variable Model for Statistical Speech Synthesis

In Thai language, stress is an important prosodic feature that not only affects naturalness but also has a crucial role in meaning of phrase-level utterance. It is seen that a speech synthesis model that is trained with lack of stress and phrase-level information causes incorrect tones and ambiguity in meaning of synthetic speech. Our previous work has shown that manually annotated stress infor...

The Efects of Lexical Stress in Visual and Auditory Word Recognition

The aim of the present study was to compare the processing of lexical stress across modalities in native speakers of English. We utilised the same disyllabic stimuli in both visual and auditory grammatical classification. Participants were asked to classify each individually presented word as being either a noun or a verb as quickly and accurately as possible. In line with previous findings (Ar...

Casual speech phonology and perception of further languages: The case of Latvian

Common sense tells us that we use what we (unconsciously) know about our first language to process further languages. The contribution of casual speech phonology has not been examined from this point of view. This paper looks at shared phonological processes of this type as possible aids to perception of L2 English. We proposed that complex syllable structure promotes casual speech reduction, a...

Automatic Accentuation of Words for Slovenian TTS System

The accentuation of unknown Slovene words represents a challenging task for automated solvers since in Slovenian, stress can be located on arbitrary syllables. Most words have only one stressed syllable, but there exist also words with no stress and words with more than one stress. Furthermore, different forms of the same word can be stressed differently. In this paper, we present a two level l...
